India is a very big country having an area of 3.28 million square kilometers. India is the second-most populous country in the world.
Its physical features include Himalayan mountains, northern plain, Thar desert, Coastal plain, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands, and plateau.
A large number of people having different tastes, cultures, religions, and interests live here peacefully.
India is located in the northeastern hemisphere. The Tropic of cancer (23030 N) divides the country in almost equal halves.
There are two hours of time differences between Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh. Hence, the standard meridian located at 82°30'E is taken as the standard time for the whole country.
The neighboring countries of India are Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Myanmar, China, and Pakistan.
* Sri Lanka is separated from India by a narrow channel called Palk Strait.

The northern plain lies to the south of the Himalayas. It is a flat area where construction activities are easy. The Indus, The Ganga, and The Brahmaputra drain this area which makes the soil very fertile.
Thar is the great Indian Desert that lies to the west of India.
To the south of the Northern plain lies the Peninsular Plateau. It’s also a flat land but it is higher than its surrounding areas. The Vindhya and the Satpura ranges are found here. Rivers like Narmada and Tapi drain this area.
The Western Ghats is located to the west of the peninsular plateau and the Eastern Ghats is located to the east of peninsular plateau.
Coastal plain lies to the west of the Western Ghats and east of the Eastern Ghats.
The western plain is narrow while the eastern plain is broader in size.
Lakshadweep and Andaman Nicobar are the two islands of India. Lakshadweep is located in the Arabian Sea while Andaman Nicobar is located in the Bay of Bengal.
