A map represents the area of the Earth on a flat surface using the scale. There are three types of maps:
Physical maps shows physical feature of the earth such as plains, rivers, oceans, mountains etc.
Political map shows cities, towns, counties, states, and villages along with their boundaries.
Thematic map shows roads, average rainfall, distribution of forest, Industries etc.
Every map has some components. The three major components of maps are as follows:
The size of the map is generally smaller than the actual Area on the earth. Hence, scale is used to to represent the distance between two places. Scale is the ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance represented on the map. There are two types of distance maps:
Every map has direction, which shows the exact way to reach any place. The four major directions are East, West, North, and South.
Symbols are used in a map to represent a specific building, post office, School, Hospital, Roadways, and Railways etc.
The sketch is a map, which is drawn by the hands without considering any scale.
The plan is a map of a small area, building, or house that shows its length and breadth.
