Food:

Food is a material that we eat to get energy, grow, and stay healthy. Example: Rice, wheat, chapatti etc.

Ingredients:

The materials that are required to prepare food are called ingredients. Example: spices, water, turmeric, salt, oil etc.

Sources of food:

There are two sources of food

  1. Plants
  2. Animals

Examples of food we receive from plants are rice,  wheat, gram, spinach etc.

Examples of food we receive from animals are meat, milk, egg and fish.

What is the meaning of edible parts of plant?

The part of plant that we can eat is called edible parts of plants such as seed, leaves, roots, stem etc.

Sprout:

When we soak seed such as gram in water for sometime, a white structure is visible on that seed which is known as sprout.

Nectar:

Nectar is a sweet juice that is collected by the honey bees to make honey.

Types of animals (based on their food habit):

There are mainly three types of animal based on their food habits:

  1. Herbivores
  2. Carnivores
  3. Omnivores

Herbivores: Animals that eat plant or plant products are called herbivores. Example: cow, goat and sheep.

Carnivores: Animals that eat other animals are  called carnivores. Example: Lion and tiger.

Omnivores: Animals that eat both plants and meat are called omnivores. Example: Bear and crow.
