Fibre

Fibres are the smallest and the thinnest strands from which a thread and further a cloth materials are made.

Example: cotton fibre and jute fibre.

Fabric

Fabric is the arrangement of threads that form the cloth.

Types of fibres

There are two types of fibres:

  1. Natural fibres
  2. Synthetic fibres

Natural fibres

The fibres, which are obtained from natural sources such as plants and animals, are called natural fibres. Example: silk, wool etc.

Synthetic fibres

The fibres, which are made of chemicals in lab, are called synthetic or man-made fibers. Example: polyester, acrylic etc.

Features of some plant fibres

Cotton

  1. Cotton is a kharif crop.
  2. Cotton plants are grown in black soil.
  3. It needs warm climate.
  4. Cotton is grown in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh etc. in India.

Jute

  1. Jute can be grown on loamy alluvial soil, but it can also grown on clay and sandy soil.
  2. It can is harvested in rainy season.
  3. Jute is grown in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam.

Terms related to making fabric to fibre

Ginning: Separation of fibres from its seed is called Ginning.

Yarns: First process to make fabric from fibre is to convert fibre into yarn. Yarn is also called thread.

Spinning: Making yarn from fibres is called Spinning.

Weaving: Arranging two sets of yarns to make fabric is called Weaving.

Looms: loom is a machine, which is used for weaving.

Knitting: It is the process of weaving a single yarn into fabric. Example: making of sweaters.
