Q1: Modern farming methods require more inputs which are manufactured in industry. Do you agree?

Ans: Yes, I agree. The modern farming inputs are manufactured in industries. Examples are as follows:

  1. Tractor which is a machine is assembled in a factory.
  2. The fertilizers that are used to increase the nutrients of land are also manufactured in industries with the help of chemicals.
  3. The tub well used for irrigation is also manufactured in factory.

Q2: How did the spread of electricity help the farmers of Palampur?

Ans: The spread of electricity helped the farmer in the following way:

  1. The farmers of palampur were able to irrigate their lands round the year.
  2. They were able to grow more than one crop in a year.

Q3: Is it important to increase the area under irrigation? Why?

Ans: Yes, it is important to increase the area under irrigation to ensure more production of food grains. Also, a large population in India depends on agriculture for livelihood.

Q4: Why are the wages for farm labourers in Palampur less than the minimum wages?

Ans: There were large number of unemployed farm labourers and the competition for work was very high. Hence, they were ready to work at any wage rate, which is the reason they were paid less than the minimum wages.

Q5:  What are the different ways to increasing production on the same land? Use examples to explain.

Ans: There are two ways to increase the production on the same land:

  1. Crop rotation
  2. Using modern methods

Crop rotation: crop rotation refers to growing different crops at different interval on the same land. Example: after harvesting wheat a farmer may grow mustard and further potatoes.

Using modern methods: modern methods include the use of machines, pesticides and fertilizer.

  1. Machine such as tractor helps easy and faster ploughing of the field.
  2. Fertilizer helps to increase the level of nutrients in the field.
  3. Pesticide protects the crop of insects.

Q6: Describe the work of a farmer with 1 hectare of land.

Ans: A farmer will mainly grow wheat and rice by using the seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. Due to small land area, he may not be using any big machine such as tractor.

Q7: How do medium and large farmers obtain capital for farming? How is it different from the small farmer?

Ans:  The medium and large farmers use their own previous year savings that they have saved after selling the surplus grain in the town. It is very different from the small farmers because small farmers borrow money from big farmers or moneylenders for farming. In return, they have to pay high interest.

Q8: On what terms did Savita get a loan from Tajpal Singh? Would Savita’s condition be different if she could get a loan from the bank at a low rate of interest?

Ans: Savita got loan from Tejpal on the following conditions:

  1. She had received the loan at rate of 24% for just four months, which is very high.
  2. She had promised Tejpal to work on his field in the harvest season for Rs. 100 per day, which is less than minimum wage.

Yes, her condition would be different if she got a loan from the bank in the following manner:

  1. She had to pay less interest in more time. Example: @8-9% for 5 years.
  2. She wouldn’t have to work for anyone at minimum wage, she would have spend her entire time on her field.

Q9: What are the non-farm production activities taking place in your region? Make a short list.

Ans: The non-farm activities in my region are as follows:

  1. Shops
  2. Transportation services
  3. Banking services
  4. Labourers
  5. Handy craft activity
  6. Constructions

Q10: What can be done so that more non-farm production activities can be started in villages?

Ans: To increase the non-farm production activities in villages following things can be done:

  1. People of villages could be educated and be shared new ideas with them.
  2. Government may give facility to start new business.
  3. Low interest rate may be provided by the government banks.
  4. People could also be given subsidy.
