1. Tribals

Ans: The communities of people living in forests are called tribals. They are also known as Advasis which means the first people to live in a state.

2. Chipko Movement

Ans: The Chipko Movement is the most iconic people’s movement which took place on 26th March 1974. A group of people along with Sundar Lal Bahuguna stopped the forest contractors from cutting down forest by hugging the trees.

3. Joint Forest Management

Ans: Joint forest management means that the forest are the property of government along with the private communities living there. Both need to work together to protect forests.

  4. The timber from forests is used in building houses, furniture and railway sleepers.

2. How are tribal people dependent on the forests?

Ans: Tribal people dependents on the forests in the following way:

  1. They get food and fodder from the forest.
  2. They sell things obtained from the forest to earn money.
  3. They collect honey, hum resin, fruits, lac etc and sell them in the nearby market.
  4. They make ropes, baskets, brooms, bidis which they sell to buy clothes and spices.

3. How has deforestation affected the life of tribals?

Ans: Deforestation has affected the life of tribals in the following ways:

  1. It has caused tribals to lose their homes and livelihood.
  2. They are forced to shift to cities.
  3. They face discrimination in urban areas.
  4. They suffer from psychological trauma as their culture and beliefs get affected.

4. What is a sacred grove?

Ans: Tribals worship some patches of forests, which contains valuable trees. Felling of trees is prohibited in these areas. These areas are called sacred groves.

5. What steps have been taken up by the government to conserve forests and wildlife?

Ans: Government has taken up the following steps:

  1. Government has setup many national park and wild life sanctuaries where cutting of trees and hunting of animals is prohibited.
  2. Van Mahotsava is celebrated every year to create awareness among people. Also, saplings of plants are planted.
