Class 7 NCERT Math Fractions and decimals

This notes will provide you all the concepts of Chapter 2 Fractions and decimals.

What are fractions?

A fractional number is made of Numerator and denominator. Example: 2/5. Here 2 is numerator and 5 is denominator.

The 2/5 is read as Two upon five or Two by five.

Types of fractions

There are mainly three types of fractions:

  1. Proper fraction
  2. Improper fraction
  3. Mixed fraction

1. Proper fraction

A fraction is called proper fraction when its denominator is greater than its numerator. 

For example: 2/5

Here 5 (denominator) is greater than 2 (numerator). Hence it is a proper fraction.

2. Improper fraction

A fraction is called improper fraction when its numerator is greater than its denominator.

For example: 10/3 

Here, 10 (numerator) is greater than 3 (denominator). Hence it is an improper fraction.

3. Mixed fraction

A fraction that consists of a whole number in front and fraction at the back is called the mixed fraction.
