(a) Hunter-gatherers chose to live in caves and rock shelters because it protect them from wild animals and harsh weather.

Q2. Why do people who grow crops have to stay in the same place for a long time?

Ans: The people who grow crops have to stay in the same place for a long time to take care of the crop, to irrigate it, and protect it from animals.

Q3. Why do archaeologists think that many people who lived in Mehrgarh were hunters to start with and that herding became more important later?

Ans: The archaeologists have found the bones of deer and pigs in excavation, which means that people at Mehrgarh were hunters at first. At some other sites in Mehrgarh, archaeologists have found some burials in which a person’s dead body was buried with his pet goat.

Q4. Why did the hunter-gatherers travel from place to place? In what ways are these similar to/different from the reasons for which we travel today?

Ans: The hunter and gatherers used to travel for the following reasons:

  1. In search of food and water.
  2. To hunt animals.

Today people travel for the following reasons:

  1. In search of a job
  2. For education
  3. To meet their relatives
  4. To spend holidays

Q5. List three ways in which hunter-gatherers used fire (see page 15). Would you use fire for any of these purposes today?

Ans: The hunter-gatherers used fire for the following three things:

  1. To cook raw meat.
  2. For light and heat
  3. To keep wild animals away

Yes, today we use fire to cook food in our homes.

Q6. List three ways in which the lives of farmers and herders would have been different from that of hunter-gatherers.

Ans: Difference between the lives of farmers-herders and hunter-gatherers:

  1. The farmers-herders used to live in one place for a long time whereas the hunter-gatherers have to move in search of food and water.
  2. The farmers grow their own crops and herders rear their animals for milk and meat whereas the hunter-gatherers have to depend on nature for their livelihood.
  3. Farmer-herders were living a settled life whereas hunter-gatherers were travelling each day.
